IT support for civil construction and infrastructure contractors

Civil projects move a site office from one paddock or roadside to another, often for months at a time. We get each site connected quickly, keep the design and survey files in order, and protect the records a project depends on.

IT for civil construction & infrastructure

Civil construction and infrastructure work has its own rhythm. A project might be a subdivision, a roading upgrade, a pipeline or a bridge, with a temporary site office that must be connected, secured and then packed up when the job ends. Engineers and surveyors share large design and survey files, machine control systems need current models, site teams record daily diaries, inspections and plant checks on tablets, and clients and consultants expect document control that would satisfy an auditor or the principal's representative.

That creates IT problems most office-based firms never see. Site offices start without internet. Large drawing and survey files struggle across slow connections. Devices are used in mud, rain and dust, and are swapped between crews. Project documents arrive by email, file transfer links and client portals, and the latest revision of a drawing is not always the one on the site laptop. Subcontractors need limited access to some files but not others, and project data needs to be kept long after practical completion for defects, claims and audits.

Office IT supports civil construction and infrastructure contractors with three to seventy-five office and site staff. Our technicians work onsite in Auckland and Hamilton, which covers many project sites in the upper North Island; site offices further afield are set up and supported remotely, with planned visits by arrangement. We provide portable site connectivity, organise project files and revisions, manage rugged devices for site teams and keep your head office secure, so each new project starts quickly and finishes with records intact.

Common IT problems in this industry

New site offices with no internet

Every project needs a working connection from day one, often in places with no fixed line and weak mobile coverage.

Large design and survey files

Models, point clouds and drawing sets are big. Syncing them to site over a slow link is painful and often leads to working from old copies.

Document control and revisions

Clients and consultants expect controlled drawings and records. Uncontrolled copies on laptops lead to rework and disputes.

Rugged use on site

Tablets and laptops face dust, rain and drops, and are often passed between crews, making security and accountability harder.

Subcontractor access

External parties need access to specific project files without seeing commercial information or other projects.

Records long after completion

Daily diaries, test results, inspections and correspondence may be needed for defects periods, claims and audits years later.

What we set up for you

Portable site connectivity kits

A standard kit of router, firewall and satellite or 4G connection, preconfigured by us, gets a site office online quickly and securely.

Structured project file storage

Each project gets a standard folder structure in SharePoint or your document system, with clear revision control and access by role.

Smart file sync for site

We configure sync so site laptops hold only current project files and update automatically, keeping large files manageable on slower links.

Managed rugged devices

Rugged tablets and laptops are enrolled in device management, encrypted and assigned to people, so a lost device can be locked and wiped remotely.

Controlled external sharing

Subcontractors and consultants receive access to specific folders with expiry dates, instead of copies of files sent by email.

Project archive and backup

Project records are backed up daily and archived at completion in a structure that can be searched later, with retention you choose.

Systems we support

We work with the software and equipment your business already relies on, and with your software vendors when something needs their help.

  • Autodesk Civil 3D and AutoCAD
  • 12d Model for civil design and survey
  • Machine control and GNSS survey data workflows
  • Site diary, inspection and plant check apps
  • Project document control and client collaboration portals
  • Xero and MYOB, or a construction ERP
  • Microsoft 365, Teams and SharePoint

IT for civil construction & infrastructure: questions

How quickly can you get a new site office online?

With a preconfigured connectivity kit ready to go, a site can be online as soon as the kit arrives and is placed with a clear view of the sky or a usable mobile signal. In Auckland and Hamilton we can install onsite; elsewhere the kit is shipped and set up with our remote help, or on a planned visit.

How do we stop site crews using old drawings?

Keep one controlled source for current revisions and sync only that to site devices. We set up folder permissions so superseded drawings are archived and marked clearly, and train site leads on where to find the current set.

Can subcontractors access our files safely?

Yes. We share specific folders with external users, using their own sign-in and an expiry date, rather than emailing copies. You can see who has access and remove it when their part of the job is finished.

Do you install data cabling in site offices?

We install low-voltage data cabling, network points and Wi-Fi. Power for site offices, including generators and switchboards, is work for a registered electrician.

How long should we keep project records?

That depends on your contracts and any legal or client requirements, which your team or advisers should confirm. Our job is to make sure records are stored, backed up and searchable for as long as you decide to keep them.

How is support priced for a contractor with changing site staff?

Office and project staff are usually on the Managed plan at $119 per user per month plus GST, and site connectivity kits are quoted in writing per project. Seasonal or short-term staff can be added and removed as projects start and finish.
