IT support for pharmacies

A pharmacy cannot dispense if its systems are down, and patients do not wait patiently at the counter. We keep the dispensary, the shop and the back office connected and secure.

IT for pharmacies

Community pharmacies run a demanding mix of healthcare and retail from one small building. The dispensary relies on its dispensing software, label printers, barcode scanners and a stable internet link for electronic prescriptions and funding claims. The shop floor runs point-of-sale, card terminals and stock control. The back office handles rosters, supplier orders and email. When one piece fails, the queue builds quickly, and some patients need their medicine that day.

Pharmacies also hold a great deal of sensitive information. Dispensing histories reveal health conditions, and the Health Information Privacy Code 2020 governs how that information is kept and shared. Card payments bring their own security expectations from banks and payment providers. Yet many pharmacies run on a handful of ageing PCs, a consumer router supplied years ago and passwords shared by everyone behind the counter, simply because nobody has had time to look at it properly.

Office IT supports pharmacies with three to seventy-five staff, from single stores to small groups. We make sure dispensary PCs and printers are dependable, keep the internet connection resilient with a backup link, separate payment terminals and patient Wi-Fi from clinical systems, and give each pharmacist and technician their own sign-in. When something does break during trading hours, we fix most problems remotely and send a technician onsite in Auckland and Hamilton when hardware needs replacing.

Common IT problems in this industry

Dispensing depends on the internet

Electronic prescriptions, funding claims and many dispensing functions need a working connection. An outage at the wrong moment stops the dispensary.

Label printers and scanners

Dispensary label printers and barcode scanners are small devices that cause big delays when drivers or settings go wrong.

Shared counter logins

Pharmacists, technicians and retail staff often share a single Windows login, which makes it impossible to tell who accessed a patient's history.

Card payments and retail

Point-of-sale and EFTPOS terminals handle every sale. Card data needs to be kept away from general browsing and email on the same network.

Long trading hours

Many pharmacies open early, close late and trade on weekends, so maintenance has to be planned carefully around opening times.

Group and multi-store setups

Owners with several stores need consistent systems, central reporting and a way to manage staff accounts across every location.

What we set up for you

Backup internet connection

A second connection, often a 4G or 5G router, takes over automatically if the main link fails, so ePrescriptions and claims keep flowing.

Dependable dispensary hardware

Dispensary PCs, label printers and scanners are set up to a standard, monitored for faults and replaced before they fail during trading.

Individual sign-ins

Each pharmacist and technician signs in as themselves, with quick user switching so the counter keeps moving and access records stay accurate.

Segmented store network

Dispensing systems, point-of-sale, card terminals, staff devices and customer Wi-Fi each sit on separate segments behind a managed firewall.

Maintenance outside trading hours

Updates and changes are scheduled for when the store is closed, and we check the dispensary is working before the next morning's opening.

Consistent setup across stores

For pharmacy groups we standardise hardware, network design and accounts, so staff can move between stores and support is quicker.

Systems we support

We work with the software and equipment your business already relies on, and with your software vendors when something needs their help.

  • NZ ePrescription Service for electronic prescriptions
  • Point-of-sale and retail stock control systems

IT for pharmacies: questions

Do you support our dispensing software?

We look after the PCs, printers, scanners, network, internet connection and sign-ins the dispensing software relies on. Problems inside the software itself are raised with the vendor, and we work with their support team so you are not left relaying messages between us.

What happens if our internet goes down?

With a backup connection installed, the router switches to the mobile link automatically and staff may not notice. We are alerted to the change, follow up the fault with your provider and switch back once the main line is restored.

Can the customer Wi-Fi be offered safely?

Yes. Customer Wi-Fi runs on its own network with internet access only, and it cannot reach dispensary PCs, point-of-sale or card terminals.

How do you protect dispensing records?

With individual sign-ins, encrypted devices, current updates, endpoint protection, a segmented network and checked backups. These are the technical safeguards the Health Information Privacy Code expects, and your pharmacy remains responsible for its own privacy policies.

Can you work around our trading hours?

Yes. Planned updates and project work are scheduled for when the store is closed. Urgent problems during trading are handled remotely first, and onsite in Auckland and Hamilton when hardware has failed.

We are fitting out a new store. Can you help?

Yes. We plan the data cabling, network cabinet, Wi-Fi, dispensary and counter positions with your fit-out team, and quote it in writing first. Power outlets and electrical work are done by your registered electrician; we handle the low-voltage data side.
