IT support for engineering and architecture practices

Large models, heavy drawings and powerful workstations need IT built for design work. We keep projects fast to open, safe to store and reachable from wherever your team works.

IT for engineering & architecture

Design practices push their IT harder than most offices. CAD and BIM models can run to gigabytes, point clouds and renders even more, and a project folder may hold years of revisions, consultant files and site photos. Opening a model over a slow connection, or waiting for a file to sync, wastes expensive design time, and a corrupted central model can set a project back days. With consultants and contractors exchanging files every week, design practices also need clear rules on which version is current and where it lives.

Workstations matter too. Graphics cards, memory and fast drives decide how smoothly designers can work, and specialist software often needs particular drivers and versions. Licensing is its own task, with named-user subscriptions to manage as staff join and leave and project timelines that don't wait for a licence to be reassigned. Remote and hybrid work adds another layer: a designer at home still needs workstation-class performance, which a standard laptop and a home connection cannot deliver on their own. Planning workstations, storage and access together avoids paying for power that sits idle in one place while staff struggle in another.

Office IT supports engineering, architecture, surveying and design practices with three to seventy-five staff. We specify and look after workstations, set up storage that is fast in the office and accessible remotely, keep project data backed up with version history, and support plotters and large-format printers. Your design software stays with its vendor; we make sure it has the hardware and network it needs. Hardware is quoted in writing before anything is ordered.

Common IT problems in this industry

Very large project files

Models, drawings and point clouds are too big for slow storage or basic cloud sync, which leads to long waits, conflicts and duplicate copies.

Workstation performance

Under-specified graphics cards, memory or drives slow every designer down, and consumer drivers can cause crashes in design software.

Remote access to heavy software

Designers working from home can't simply open a multi-gigabyte model over a home connection and expect it to perform.

Licence management

Named-user subscriptions for design software must be assigned, reassigned and renewed promptly, or staff are blocked mid-project.

Project archives and liability

Practices need to keep project records for many years in case of claims, and must be able to find and open them long after the project ends.

Plotters and large-format printing

Plotters are expensive, temperamental and often critical before a submission or site meeting.

What we set up for you

Fast project storage

A properly sized NAS or file server on a fast office network, with cloud sync or replication chosen to suit file sizes rather than forcing everything through OneDrive.

Specified workstations

Workstations matched to your software's requirements, with certified graphics drivers and updates tested before they reach designers.

Remote design access

Secure remote access to office workstations so designers at home control a powerful machine in the office instead of copying large files.

Backups with version history

Project storage backed up with versions kept, so a corrupted model or overwritten drawing can be restored to an earlier point.

Licence tracking

A register of design software licences and who holds them, with prompt reassignment when people join, leave or change projects.

Plotter support

Plotters and large-format printers set up, networked and supported, with drivers and paper settings documented.

Systems we support

We work with the software and equipment your business already relies on, and with your software vendors when something needs their help.

  • Autodesk AutoCAD, Revit and Civil 3D
  • Graphisoft Archicad
  • Bluebeam Revu for PDF markup and review
  • Structural and civil analysis software
  • Rendering and visualisation software
  • Project and timesheet management tools
  • Microsoft 365 with Teams and SharePoint

IT for engineering & architecture: questions

Should our project files be in SharePoint or on a server?

It depends on file sizes and how your design software works. Many practices keep live models on fast local storage and use cloud services for documents, sharing and offsite backup. We look at your projects and software before recommending a setup.

How can designers work from home on large models?

The most reliable option is usually secure remote access to their office workstation, so the heavy work happens in the office and only the screen travels over the internet. We set this up with multi-factor sign-in.

Can you specify and buy workstations?

Yes. We specify workstations to match your design software's published requirements and your typical project size, then set them up, test them and support them. Hardware is quoted in writing before ordering.

Do you manage design software licences?

We keep a register of your licences, assign and remove them as staff change, and remind you about renewals. Licence purchases go through your preferred reseller or directly with the vendor.

How do you protect project archives?

We keep closed projects on reliable storage with backups that include version history and offsite copies, and we check that archived files can actually be opened when tested.

Which plan suits a design practice?

Most practices choose the Managed plan at $119 per user per month plus GST. Practices with their own NAS or server and plotters often choose Complete at $169, which includes server, NAS and printer support.
