IT support for iwi and Māori organisations

Iwi, rūnanga, hapū trusts and Māori service providers look after information that belongs to their people. We help keep that information secure, well governed and within reach of the staff and whānau who need it.

IT for iwi & māori organisations

Iwi and Māori organisations often run several kinds of work under one roof: a tribal register of registered members, grants and scholarships, health and social services, commercial and land holdings, and events at the marae. Each arm has its own systems and its own sensitive information, and staff may be spread across a main office, satellite offices and homes in the rohe. Technology needs to serve all of that without becoming a burden on a small team.

Information about people, whakapapa and whenua carries obligations beyond ordinary business records. Many organisations are thinking carefully about Māori data sovereignty: who governs the data, where it is stored, who can see it and how decisions about it are made. These are questions for your board and your people to answer, and your IT should be able to put those decisions into practice rather than quietly working against them. Good IT makes those choices visible and keeps them in place.

Office IT supports iwi and Māori organisations with practical, respectful IT. We secure member and client records, set clear permissions between the different arms of the organisation, explain plainly where each system stores its data, and help connect offices and marae. Staff in Auckland and Hamilton can have onsite help, and offices anywhere else in Aotearoa are supported remotely, with onsite project work by arrangement. We take time to understand how your organisation works before we change anything.

Common IT problems in this industry

Registers of members

A tribal register holds names, contact details and whakapapa links for thousands of people. It is precious information, and it must be protected from both outsiders and casual internal access.

Data sovereignty decisions

Boards want to know where data is held and who controls it. Cloud services often store data offshore by default unless someone checks and chooses otherwise.

Several arms, one network

Health, education, commercial and governance work may share one office. Without separate permissions, staff in one area can end up seeing records from another.

Marae and rural connectivity

Marae and regional offices may have patchy internet. Hui, livestreams and online voting all depend on a connection that holds up on the day.

Elections and hui with members

Annual meetings, trustee elections and consultation rounds bring heavy email, online forms and video. Scams that copy official-looking messages are a real risk to members.

Funding reporting

Contracts with government agencies and funders come with reporting and information security expectations that a small team has to meet alongside its everyday work.

What we set up for you

Clear data location

We document where every system stores its data and, where a service offers it, help you choose New Zealand or Australian storage to match your board's decisions.

Permissions by kaupapa

Each arm of the organisation gets its own folders, groups and access, so health records, member registers and commercial files stay with the people who need them.

Protected member register

The register and its exports are kept in access-controlled storage, with multi-factor sign-in for every staff member and audit logs of who opened what.

Connected offices and marae

We plan internet, Wi-Fi and backup connections for offices and marae, including mobile or satellite failover where fibre is not available.

Safer communications

Email filtering, protected domains and staff awareness training reduce the chance of members receiving fake messages that appear to come from your organisation.

Shared tools for kaimahi

Microsoft 365, Teams and SharePoint are set up so staff across offices and homes work from the same files, calendars and channels.

Systems we support

We work with the software and equipment your business already relies on, and with your software vendors when something needs their help.

  • Microsoft 365, Teams and SharePoint
  • Tribal register and membership databases
  • Client and case management systems for health and social services
  • Xero and grant tracking tools
  • Online voting and survey platforms for trustee elections
  • Video conferencing and livestreaming for hui

IT for iwi & māori organisations: questions

Can you help us keep our data in New Zealand?

Where a service offers a choice of storage location, we help you understand the options and set them to match your board's decisions. We also document which systems store data where, so your trustees can make informed choices rather than relying on defaults.

Do you advise on Māori data sovereignty?

Data sovereignty is a matter for your organisation, your iwi and your people. We do not set that direction. Our role is technical: explaining how systems work, where data sits and who can access it, then putting your decisions into effect.

How do you protect our tribal register?

We store it in access-controlled systems, limit it to the staff who need it, protect sign-ins with multi-factor authentication and back it up. Bulk exports can be restricted and logged, which matters when the register is used for elections or mail-outs.

Can you support offices outside Auckland and Hamilton?

Yes, through remote support for staff and devices. Projects at regional offices or marae, such as Wi-Fi or connectivity upgrades, can be done onsite by arrangement and are quoted in writing first.

Can you help with hui and online elections?

We can check connectivity, set up video and livestreaming equipment and make sure email and websites are protected before a large event. The voting process itself is run by your returning officer or chosen provider.

Which plan fits a small iwi office?

Most small offices choose the Managed plan at $119 per user per month plus GST. Organisations that hold health or social service records often choose Complete at $169, which adds onsite support and staff security training.
