IT support for electrical and plumbing contractors

Your technicians are the business, and their phones and tablets are now their job sheets, timesheets and compliance paperwork. We keep those devices, the job app and the office behind them working properly.

IT for electrical & plumbing contractors

Electrical and plumbing contractors have moved their whole workflow onto devices in the van. Jobs are booked and dispatched through a job management app, technicians record time, materials, photos and test results on a phone or tablet, certificates of compliance are completed digitally, and invoices go out from the office the same afternoon the job is signed off. When it all works, admin shrinks dramatically. When a phone breaks, the app will not sync or a login is locked, a technician is stuck on site with no job details and no way to finish paperwork.

Most trade businesses have grown quickly, with IT added as needed: personal phones used for work, a shared office login for the job app, supplier accounts with one password everyone knows, and a laptop in the office holding years of quotes and photos. The risk builds quietly. A departed apprentice still has access to customer addresses, a lost phone exposes the whole job history, and a fake supplier invoice in the accounts inbox looks just like the real one from the wholesaler.

Office IT supports electrical and plumbing contractors with three to seventy-five staff. Our technicians come onsite in Auckland and Hamilton, and contractors elsewhere in New Zealand are supported remotely. We set up and manage technician devices, make sure your job management app has the right accounts and permissions, protect the office and supplier accounts, and back up the photos and certificates you need to keep. We are an IT provider, not a trade: our own cabling work is data only, never mains electrical.

Common IT problems in this industry

Devices that live in vans

Phones and tablets get dropped, rained on and left on dashboards. Without management, a lost device takes customer data and job history with it.

Job app access and sync

If accounts are shared or devices are out of date, job details fail to sync, photos go missing and invoices get delayed.

Compliance records you must keep

Certificates, test results and job photos are evidence of compliant work and may be needed years later if a job is questioned.

Staff turnover and apprentices

Technicians and apprentices come and go. Each needs access on day one, and each leaver must lose access to customer details straight away.

Supplier account and invoice fraud

Wholesaler trade accounts and accounts payable inboxes are targets for fake invoices and stolen logins used to order goods.

Office running on one laptop

Quotes, templates and photos on one office computer, with no tested backup, put years of business records at risk.

What we set up for you

Managed technician devices

Phones and tablets are enrolled in device management, kept updated and set up with the job app, so a lost device is locked and a replacement is quick to issue.

Individual job app accounts

Every technician has their own login with the right permissions, so records show who did the work and access can be removed in one step.

Protected certificates and photos

Job photos, certificates and test results are backed up from your job management system and Microsoft 365, so records are available when needed.

Rugged cases and mounts

We recommend tough cases, screen protectors and vehicle mounts suited to site work, and hardware is quoted in writing before ordering.

Secure supplier and bank accounts

Wholesaler portals, banking and Xero use multi-factor sign-in, and a business password manager replaces shared passwords on sticky notes.

Office set up properly

Office files move into Microsoft 365 with daily backup, and the office PC, printer and network are managed so admin staff can keep the jobs flowing.

Systems we support

We work with the software and equipment your business already relies on, and with your software vendors when something needs their help.

  • Fergus, Tradify, ServiceM8 and simPRO job management
  • Digital certificate of compliance and test result forms
  • Xero and MYOB for invoicing and payroll
  • Wholesaler trade portals and online ordering
  • Vehicle GPS tracking apps
  • Microsoft 365, Outlook and OneDrive
  • Business password managers

IT for electrical & plumbing contractors: questions

Can you support our job management app?

Yes, in the sense that we manage everything it depends on: the devices, accounts, permissions, internet and backups. Configuration of the app's job templates and workflows usually sits with the vendor or your office team, and we work with them when a problem crosses over.

Should technicians use their own phones?

It can work if business data is kept in managed apps that we can remove without touching personal content. Many contractors find company devices simpler because they can be set up, swapped and recovered consistently. We help you weigh up the options for your team.

Do you do electrical work?

No. Office IT installs low-voltage data cabling, network points and Wi-Fi only. Any mains electrical work is for a registered electrician, which in your case is your own team.

How do we keep certificates and photos safe for years?

Most job apps store them in the cloud, but you should not rely on that alone. We set up backup or regular exports to storage you control, organised by job, so the records survive a change of software or a closed account.

We are based outside Auckland and Hamilton. Is that a problem?

Not for most work. Device management, account changes and help desk support are all remote. Onsite visits are standard in Auckland and Hamilton, and elsewhere we plan visits for office installation work by arrangement.

What does it cost for a team of technicians?

Office staff and technicians who use Microsoft 365 are usually on the Essentials plan at $69 or the Managed plan at $119 per user per month plus GST. We agree exactly which devices are covered in writing before starting.
