IT support for manufacturers

When a production PC, label printer or factory switch fails, orders stop shipping. We support the office and the shop floor as one connected system.

IT for manufacturing

Manufacturing businesses depend on IT in places most offices never think about. Production planning, stock and orders run through an ERP or inventory system; label printers produce the barcodes and compliance labels every carton needs; shop-floor PCs run machine software, quality checks and time clocks; and the network has to reach across a dusty, noisy building with steel, machinery and forklifts in the way. A fault in any one of these areas is felt straight away by the people trying to get orders made, labelled and out the door, so support needs to understand the floor as well as the office.

Factories also tend to hold onto equipment. A PC running an older version of Windows because the CNC or test software was never updated is common, and it is often plugged into the same network as the office. That makes it a soft target for ransomware, which can halt production for days rather than hours. Recovering from that is slow and costly, and many manufacturers only discover how exposed their production equipment is after an incident, when customers are already chasing late orders.

Office IT supports manufacturers with three to seventy-five staff in Auckland and Hamilton. We design and cable factory networks, separate production equipment from office systems, support ERP users and label printing, and plan around shifts so maintenance doesn't stop the line. We work on low-voltage systems only; machinery and mains power stay with your electrician and equipment suppliers. Every change is documented, so your production manager and our technicians are working from the same picture of the network.

Common IT problems in this industry

Shop-floor PCs that can't stop

Production, scheduling and quality PCs often run all shift. Updates, failures or reboots at the wrong time stop work on the floor.

Legacy machine software

Machine controllers and test rigs may need older operating systems that no longer receive security updates and can't simply be replaced.

Label and barcode printing

Despatch depends on label printers, templates and their link to the ERP. A broken driver or template can halt every outgoing order.

Network coverage in a harsh building

Steel racking, machinery and long distances weaken Wi-Fi and stretch cable runs, leaving dead spots where scanners and tablets drop out.

Flat networks

When office PCs, machines, cameras and guest devices share one network, a single infected laptop can reach production equipment.

Supplier and customer fraud

Manufacturers exchange purchase orders and invoices with many suppliers, which makes fake bank detail changes and invoice scams a regular threat.

What we set up for you

Segmented factory network

Production equipment, office computers, cameras and guest devices on separate network segments, with firewall rules allowing only what each needs.

Protected legacy PCs

Older machine PCs isolated from the internet and the office network, backed up as full images, with a plan for the day the hardware dies.

Industrial-grade Wi-Fi and cabling

Access points placed for racking and machinery, data cabling run and labelled to the floor, and switches in protected cabinets.

Label printer support

Label printers, drivers and templates set up and documented, with spare printer settings ready so a replacement can be swapped in quickly.

Shift-aware maintenance

Updates and changes scheduled around production shifts and shutdowns, never in the middle of a run.

ERP and stock system support

The PCs, scanners, connections and sign-ins your ERP or inventory system relies on kept healthy, with vendor issues raised on your behalf.

Systems we support

We work with the software and equipment your business already relies on, and with your software vendors when something needs their help.

  • ERP and inventory systems such as MYOB Advanced or Microsoft Dynamics
  • Label design and barcode printing software
  • Machine, CNC and test-rig control software
  • Time and attendance clocks
  • Quality and production tracking apps
  • Xero or MYOB accounting
  • Microsoft 365 for office staff and supervisors

IT for manufacturing: questions

Can you support PCs that run old machine software?

Yes. Where an old operating system has to stay, we isolate the PC from the internet and the office network, image it so it can be rebuilt quickly, and keep a record of the software and licence details. We also help plan a replacement before the hardware fails.

How do you avoid disrupting production?

We learn your shift pattern and schedule updates, firewall changes and hardware swaps around it, usually between shifts, at weekends or during planned shutdowns. Urgent fixes are done remotely where possible.

Can you fix Wi-Fi dead spots on the factory floor?

Usually. We survey the building, then place and cable access points to suit racking and machinery. For fixed equipment, a cabled connection is often more reliable than Wi-Fi and we can run it.

Do you support label printers?

Yes. We set up and document label printers, drivers and templates, connect them to your ERP or despatch system and keep settings recorded so a spare can be swapped in without a long rebuild.

Do you work on machinery or power?

No. Our work is low voltage: data cabling, network equipment, computers and printers. Machine controls and electrical wiring stay with your equipment supplier and registered electrician.

What plan suits a manufacturer?

Most manufacturers use the Managed plan at $119 per user per month plus GST for office and supervisory staff. Shared shop-floor PCs and label printers are covered as part of the network and devices we look after, which we agree up front.
